QLD: still no decision on stadium site
BRISBANE, Aug 31 AAP - The Queensland government is being accused of lacking direction
after again failing to reach a decision on a site for Brisbane's new super sports stadium.
Meeting in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Cabinet discussed the issue yesterday but without
making a definite decision. Details of the meeting were not given.
Opposition Leader Rob Borbidge said the indecision of Cabinet showed the Beattie Government
was lacking direction.
He said Sports Minister Bob Gibbs had promised a decision on the stadium within weeks of
Labor winning government in July last year.
Premier Peter Beattie said a decision was likely before the state budget on September 14
after Brisbane Lord Mayor Jim Soorley yesterday gave his views to cabinet on the two proposals
made so far.
Mr Soorley detailed his objections to an upgrade of Lang Park and support for a completely
new stadium at the RNA showgrounds.
Mr Beattie said later Treasury had warned building the stadium at the RNA site would cost
about $90 million more than at Lang Park.
The development is expected to cost between $200 million and $370 million.
