QLD: Telstra waives backpackers fire phone bill

BRISBANE, Aug 30 AAP - Telstra would waive a $20,000 phone bill run up by Queensland's
Isis Shire Council in the wake of the fatal backpackers fire at Childers, Mayor Bill Trevor
said today.

The council opened four of its telephone lines 24 hours a day to survivors of the fire
which killed 15 backpackers in June.

Mr Trevor said the phones were used consistently by the survivors, many of them from overseas.

The township welcomed Telstra's generosity, he said.

Mr Trevor said Childers had received "enormous support" from around Australia and from
overseas following the tragedy.
